3 Bottles To Celebrate National White Wine Day
It seems like every other day is a ‘National _______ Wine Day’. And while I usually let them roll on by, I thought this observation of National White Wine Day (which is today) would be a cool opportunity to show off three wines that I normally don’t see get enough shine.
In my newsletter last week, I shared five wines you should make sure to sip on before summer ends – and now I’m adding three more to that list you can absolutely take into the fall too.
From the lightest to the ‘heaviest’ on the palate, here’s the tea on three white wines that would make for great additions to your next cookout, beach day or just lounging on your patio or balcony.
Antxiola Blanco Getariako-Txakolina
Hailing from Txakoli, Spain, which is situated within the Basque Country, this wine is zippy, zesty and a certified porch-pounder. If you’re a fan of Vinho Verde from Portugal, then you’re definitely going to be interested in this Txakolina. Slightly fizzy with lots of green fruit notes, this table wine is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
COST: $18.99
ALC: 11%
TASTING NOTES: Lots of green fruit; lime zest, lime juice, green apple, fresh pear
IDEAL PAIRINGS: Fresh salads, fresh veggies with hummus, fried fish
Fakin Wines Malvazija (pronounced ‘mal-vah-zee-uh)
This is the first wine I’ve had from Istria, Croatia, and I’m so impressed with how clean and crisp it is! As the most important grape variety in Croatia, I would say that Malvazia is similar in taste to medium-bodied Viognier or Chardonnay.
COST: $19.00
ALC: 13.0%
TASTING NOTES: Subtly sweet. Lots of juicy tropical and stone fruit - peach, pineapple, nectarine, lemon. Green apple/pear skin, fennel. It’s balanced – puckery but not too acidic. There’s a minerality in the finish that’s slightly satisfying and makes me want to go back for another glass.
IDEAL PAIRINGS: Grilled chicken, grilled seafood, spicy Thai food, fried foods
Feudo Antico 2019 Biologico Pecorino
Last March, I received a very big shipment of Italian wines for a virtual tasting that took place over two weeks, and this was one of the 12 bottles coming all the way from Abruzzo, Italy. This 2019 Pecorino is, in my opinion, similar in taste to Pinot Grigio – but has more depth and flavor. The salty creaminess in the finish is enticing and worth savoring.
COST: $18.99
ALC: 13.5%
TASTING NOTES: Golden yellow apple, golden peach, apricot, honey, baked pineapple, pie crust, saline, green apple,
IDEAL PAIRINGS: Pecorino cheese, grilled fish, shellfish, pork chops
