Happy Thursday, friend!

Now that my many months of studying for the WSET are over, I’m super pumped to get back to creating and tasting wine with you!

On this edition of #ThirstyThursday, I take a trip to Penedes, Spain with help from Segura Viudas to explore their yummy portfolio of Cava.

So…what is cava?

It’s Spain’s beloved sparkling wine that comes from the Penedès region, which is about a 45-minute drive west from Barcelona. It is made in the traditional method that is typically used to make Champagne and other popular sparkling wines. Segura Viudas Cavas are fresh, crisp, acidic, sophisticated, and can be enjoyed any day of the week.

Take a look at the latest episode of #ThirstyThursday and make sure to try some Cava this weekend!

WINE NOTES

WINE #1 – Segura Viudas Cava Brut (Retail: $12)

  • A blend of 12 base wines, which include three grapes indigenous to Spain

    • Macabeo 🡪 fresh fruit (apple) taste and aroma, good acidity

    • Xarel-lo 🡪 personality, body, complexity (e.g. bitterness)

    • Parellada 🡪 the most ethereal and delicate; contributes the ‘finesse’ factor

  • Segura Viudas is focused on showcasing these grapes that can only be found in the Cava region and this is their “identity in a bottle”

  • PAIRS WITH grilled cheese, shrimp, or soft cheeses. Paella would also be really good if you want to lean into the Spanish theme.

WINE #2 – Segura Viudas Brut Rosé Cava (Retail: $12)

  • Takes 18 months to produce a bottle of this Brut Rosé. A blend of seven base wines, made from 90% Trepat (another indigenous grape), and it’s the sprinkle of Garnacha that rounds out the entire flavor, adding a spicy character.

  • PAIRS WITH with salmon or tuna; also spicy food like Mexican or Thai.

WINE #3 – Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad (Retail: $30)

  • The crown jewel of the Segura Viudas estate, this Cava is blended from Macabeo and Parellada and sits on the lees for 2 ½ - 3 years. This aging gives this Cava flavors of biscuit, bread, honey, and floral.

  • PAIRS WITH Jamón Ibérico, hearty meat dishes (like stews), and is perfect for fall and all the holiday meals we have coming up.
